As a holistic wellness coach at 5 Pillars of Health, I’m Beth Young, and I understand the frustration of waking up tired despite getting what should be adequate sleep. Through my comprehensive approach focusing on the five pillars of wellness—nutrition, movement, restorative sleep, mindfulness, and social connection—I’ve helped countless clients overcome morning fatigue and start their days feeling refreshed and energized.

My journey into wellness coaching began with my own recovery story, and I’ve witnessed firsthand how addressing the root causes of waking up tired creates lasting transformation. When you consistently wake up exhausted, it affects every aspect of your life, from your productivity to your emotional well-being. That’s why my approach goes beyond surface-level solutions to address the underlying factors contributing to your unrefreshing sleep and morning fatigue.

The experience of waking up tired isn’t just about getting more hours in bed—it’s about achieving the quality sleep your body needs for true restoration. Through the restorative sleep pillar of my five-pillar approach, we’ll work together to identify why you’re experiencing excessive tiredness and create sustainable solutions for better sleep quality.

Understanding Why You’re Waking Up Tired: Beyond Sleep Duration

Many of my clients assume that waking up tired simply means they need more sleep, but the reality is often more complex. Even if you’re getting your full 8 hours, poor sleep quality, fragmented sleep, or sleep disorders can leave you feeling exhausted each morning. Sleep inertia—that groggy feeling upon waking—can persist when your sleep cycle is disrupted or when you’re not achieving sufficient deep sleep.

Through my work as a wellness coach, I’ve learned that morning fatigue often stems from multiple factors working together. Sleep deprivation isn’t just about insufficient sleep; it can also result from poor sleep hygiene, an irregular sleep schedule, or underlying conditions like sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea that prevent restorative sleep. Your sleep environment, bedtime routines, and even your circadian rhythm all play crucial roles in determining whether you wake up refreshed or tired.

When clients come to me complaining of waking up tired, we explore their entire sleep pattern, from their consistent sleep schedule to their sleep wake cycle. Sometimes what appears to be simple fatigue is actually excessive daytime sleepiness caused by sleep disorders that require attention from a sleep specialist, but often it’s a combination of lifestyle factors that we can address through holistic wellness coaching.

The Science Behind Sleep Quality and Morning Energy

Your sleep cycle consists of multiple stages, including light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, each serving essential functions for physical and mental restoration. When you’re waking up tired, it often indicates that you’re not spending enough time in deep sleep or that your sleep is being fragmented throughout the night. Sleep debt accumulates when you consistently miss out on quality sleep, leading to daytime fatigue and excessive tiredness.

Your circadian rhythm, your body’s internal clock, regulates when you naturally feel alert and when you feel sleepy. Disruptions to this rhythm—whether from inconsistent bedtimes, light exposure, or lifestyle factors—can result in sleep drunkenness and that heavy feeling upon waking. The National Sleep Foundation emphasizes that it’s not just about sleep duration but about sleep health overall, including the timing and quality of your nights sleep.

As your wellness coach, I help you understand how factors like melatonin production, your sleep environment, and even your evening nutrition affect your ability to achieve restorative sleep. Sometimes addressing morning fatigue requires looking at conditions like insomnia or other sleep issues that prevent you from getting the quality sleep your body needs for proper restoration.

Holistic Solutions: Addressing Root Causes of Morning Exhaustion

While sleep medicine and sleep specialists can help diagnose serious sleep disorders, my approach focuses on the lifestyle and wellness factors that contribute to waking up tired. Through the 5 Pillars of Health framework, we’ll work together to optimize your sleep hygiene, establish a consistent sleep schedule, and create conditions that promote better sleep quality naturally.

This comprehensive approach might involve adjusting your nutrition to support better sleep, incorporating gentle movement like Tai Chi (which I’m certified to teach) to improve sleep quality, practicing mindfulness techniques to prepare your mind for restful sleep, and strengthening social connections that reduce stress—a common contributor to poor sleep quality and morning fatigue. We’ll also examine your sleep environment and bedtime routines to ensure they’re supporting rather than hindering your sleep health.

Many clients discover that their excessive daytime sleepiness and morning exhaustion improve dramatically when we address factors like poor sleep hygiene, irregular sleep patterns, or lifestyle habits that fragment their sleep. Rather than relying solely on external solutions, we’ll work on building your body’s natural capacity for restorative sleep.

Comprehensive Assessment: Identifying Your Unique Sleep Challenges

Every client’s experience with waking up tired is unique. Some struggle with sleep inertia due to disrupted sleep cycles, others have developed poor sleep habits that prevent deep sleep, and some may have underlying conditions that require evaluation through a sleep study. During our initial consultation, we’ll explore your complete sleep pattern, discuss any concerns about sleep disorders, and examine how your current lifestyle might be contributing to your morning fatigue.

I often recommend clients track their sleep schedule and energy levels to identify patterns that contribute to waking up tired. This might reveal issues with sleep debt, insufficient sleep quality, or factors in your sleep environment that are causing fragmented sleep. Whether you’re dealing with shift work, excessive stress, or simply need to establish healthier bedtime routines, we’ll create a personalized plan that addresses your specific challenges with morning exhaustion.

Sometimes clients discover that what they thought was just fatigue is actually related to their sleep wake cycle being out of alignment, or that their sleep issues are connected to other aspects of their wellness that we can address through the five-pillar approach.

Your Path to Energized Mornings and Renewed Vitality

Overcoming the cycle of waking up tired isn’t just about getting more sleep—it’s about achieving the deep, restorative sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed and energized each morning. Through our work together, you’ll learn to view sleep not as time lost, but as an essential pillar of your health and wellness that directly impacts your daytime energy and overall quality of life.

My holistic approach means we’ll address not just your immediate morning fatigue, but also work on building long-term sleep health that prevents future issues with excessive tiredness and daytime sleepiness. You’ll discover natural strategies for improving sleep quality, learn to optimize your sleep environment and schedule, and develop the tools you need to maintain consistent, restorative sleep for life.

Ready to transform your mornings and stop waking up tired? Let’s work together to identify the root causes of your morning exhaustion and restore the energizing sleep you deserve. Your journey to waking up refreshed and ready to embrace each day starts with understanding and optimizing your unique sleep needs through the restorative sleep pillar of wellness.

As a holistic wellness coach at 5 Pillars of Health, I’m Beth Young, and I understand the frustration of lying awake night after night, struggling with difficulty falling asleep. Through my comprehensive approach focusing on the five pillars of wellness—nutrition, movement, restorative sleep, mindfulness, and social connection—I’ve helped countless clients transform their sleep patterns and reclaim their nights.

My journey into wellness coaching began with my own recovery story, and I’ve witnessed firsthand how addressing sleep issues through a holistic lens creates lasting change. When you’re experiencing difficulty falling asleep, it affects every aspect of your life, from your energy levels to your emotional well-being. That’s why my approach goes beyond quick fixes to address the root causes of your sleep challenges.

Understanding Your Sleep Struggles: More Than Just Difficulty Falling Asleep

Many of my clients come to me thinking their sleep problem is simply about not being able to fall asleep quickly. However, difficulty falling asleep is often a symptom of deeper imbalances in your overall wellness. Poor sleep habits, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, and disrupted circadian rhythms all contribute to sleep difficulties.

Through my work as a wellness coach, I’ve learned that insomnia and other sleep disorders rarely exist in isolation. Whether you’re dealing with primary insomnia, secondary insomnia, or acute insomnia, the solution lies in understanding how your entire lifestyle impacts your sleep quality. Sleep deprivation doesn’t just happen overnight—it builds up over time through poor sleep hygiene, irregular sleep patterns, and neglecting the fundamental pillars that support healthy sleep.

The Science Behind Your Sleep Cycle and Circadian Rhythm

Your body’s natural sleep cycle is a complex process involving multiple stages, including deep sleep and REM sleep. When you experience difficulty falling asleep, you’re disrupting this natural rhythm, which can lead to daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, and even excessive daytime sleepiness over time.

Your circadian rhythm, essentially your body’s internal clock, regulates when you feel alert and when you feel sleepy. Modern life often disrupts this rhythm through artificial light exposure, irregular bedtime schedules, and poor sleep habits. As your wellness coach, I help you understand how factors like melatonin production, light exposure, and even your evening meals affect your ability to fall asleep naturally. Sometimes what appears to be a sleep disorder is actually a circadian rhythm sleep disorder that can be addressed through lifestyle modifications rather than sleep medication.

Holistic Solutions: Beyond Sleeping Pills and Sleep Aids

While sleep medicine and sleeping pills might offer temporary relief, my approach focuses on sustainable, natural solutions that address the root causes of your sleep difficulties. Many people turn to sleep aids or melatonin supplements without addressing the underlying issues causing their insomnia symptoms.

Through the 5 Pillars of Health approach, we’ll work together to improve your sleep hygiene, establish consistent sleep habits, and create an environment that promotes quality sleep. This might involve adjusting your nutrition to support better sleep, incorporating gentle movement like Tai Chi (which I’m certified to teach), practicing mindfulness techniques to quiet your mind at bedtime, and strengthening social connections that reduce stress and anxiety—common culprits behind sleep problems.

Comprehensive Assessment: Identifying Your Unique Sleep Issues

Every client’s journey to better sleep is unique. Some struggle with chronic insomnia, others have developed bad sleep habits over time, and some may have underlying conditions like sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome that require attention from a sleep specialist. During our initial consultation, we’ll explore your complete sleep pattern, discuss any sleep study results you may have, and examine how your current lifestyle might be contributing to your sleep difficulty.

I often recommend clients keep a sleep diary to track patterns and identify triggers that worsen their difficulty falling asleep. This comprehensive approach, supported by resources from organizations like the National Sleep Foundation and sleep foundation research, ensures we’re addressing all factors affecting your sleep quality. Whether you’re dealing with night shift work, excessive stress, or simply need to establish healthier bedtime routines, we’ll create a personalized plan that works for your lifestyle.

Your Path to Restorative Sleep and Renewed Vitality

Overcoming difficulty falling asleep isn’t just about getting more hours of sleep—it’s about achieving the deep, restorative sleep your body needs to heal and rejuvenate. Through our work together, you’ll learn to view sleep not as a luxury, but as a fundamental pillar of your health and wellness.

My holistic approach means we’ll address not just your immediate sleep difficulties, but also work on preventing future sleep problems and building resilience against the stresses that often trigger insomnia. You’ll discover natural insomnia treatment strategies, learn to optimize your sleep environment, and develop the tools you need to maintain healthy sleep for life. Ready to transform your nights and reclaim your energy? Let’s work together to overcome your difficulty falling asleep and restore the quality sleep you deserve.

In the late 1980s researches found that people who had an abundance of cognitive reserve were able to stay ahead of symptoms related to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s’ multiple sclerosis or a stroke. They found in some autopsies of what they expected to be “healthy brains” that there was damage consistent with a variety of brain diseases. Yet, while the individuals were alive, they had not shown symptoms of those diseases. WOW! Thus, they had a large enough cognitive reserve to offset the damages of the disease and live a “normal” life.

Since then, research has shown that people with greater cognitive reserve are better able to stave off symptoms of degenerative brain changes associated with dementia or other brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or a stroke. A more robust cognitive reserve can also help you function better for longer if you’re exposed to unexpected life events, such as stress, surgery, or toxins in the environment. Such circumstances demand extra effort from your brain—and with that extra cognitive reserve it is possible to function normally. Here are some insights gained from a variety of studies. They found that following these six steps, we can build a large cognitive reserve.

STEP 1. Eat a plant-based diet – Emphasize Fruit, Vegetables and Legumes

We’ve all experienced postprandial somnolence, right? What’s that you ask? It is the proverbial “Food Coma” from eating large meals and meals high in carbs and fats. We literally have a physical response to what we’ve eaten. In turn, when we consume food that is well balanced and filling but not over-filling, our body responds with the energy and clarity necessary to perform activities throughout day. An easy way to invite clarity and vitality and sidestep lethargy and brain fog, is to follow “The Plate.”

For years I have been passionate about personally and professionally making one simple change at a time in five key areas of our life. Nutrition, movement, relationships, quality sleep, and stress management. The most impactful of those five pillars of health is stress management because it affects the other four key areas. If we are stressed, we are less likely to make wise food choices. If we are stressed, getting movement would help exponentially, but we don’t feel like getting out and moving. Stress also affects our interactions with others and our ability to fall into a restful sleep.

Here is an easy tip that will help us get into the present, help our brain release calming hormones, and moving that stress out of our mind and body.

Breathing in a square. As you breathe, visualize drawing four lines that create a square. Let’s go – take a deep inhale and imagine drawing a horizontal line from left to right that is about four inches long; hold that breath for four seconds as you imagine drawing a vertical line from the end of the horizontal line you just draw down about four inches; slowly exhale EVERYTHING out of your lungs as you draw another four-inch horizontal line from right to left; hold your breath for four seconds as you imagine drawing a vertical line from the end of the horizontal line you just drew up about four inches to your original line and completing our square.

Wow, right?! What is happening? Two things, the deep breathing increases the oxygen to our brain which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and invites calmness. The second thing happening is as we visualize drawing the square, our mind stays focused on the present. That focus with the present means that we can’t worry about what we’re going to cook for dinner if our boss is going to be in a good mood today, whether a friend will be kind or mean (just saying, they’ll be kind if you are!) and a million other unlikely worries that rob us of peace and joy.

So, I invite you to be mindful when your mind is full. I will amaze you how this simple trick has a HUGE impact on your daily life.
